model landscaping

How to make a model with snowy landscape?
I must make a model house in my writing class and I thought it might be a good idea if I had a development landscape of snow instead of grass (I thought I might be able to get extra points for originality as I not seen the finished model with a landscape of snow), but I'm not sure how to go about doing the snow. I searched for tutorials, but none of them seemed to look all that good. Does anyone know a good tutorial or a product that can be easily obtained (one day)? It would be helpful.
Maybe the cotton as cotton balls that you could divide or white paper with glossy paint. See Crafts any hardware store, even Walmart. They have white felt, foam, paint flakes. Cotton balls can be found in health and beauty Walmart. Also If you or someone you know has preserved remnants of snow Christmas, it may look neat but I would like to test it on a small surface make sure its what you want before I covered everything with it.
