Can I keep a Mexican Fan Palm from getting huge?

I have a baby Mexican Fan Palm (trunk is about 12 or 18in) and want to see if I can keep it from getting much taller (no more than 15 ft).

now, the way they keep bonsai trees small is keep them in small comtainers, feed it well…i see no reason why it would not work for your palm tree. Bonsai growers, rather then getting a huge pot to replant in, will pull the small trees out of the pot, cut off the spiderweb roots that forms a pot inside the pot, give it fresh soil and replant into the SAME pot it was in

Is it ok to use a propane stove (camping stove) in my house so I can boil water in a big pot?

The big pot that i got is not good for glass tops.

The bamboo palm (chamaedorea seifrizii) is a beautiful, commonly kept houseplant that works as an air purifier. It has a bamboo like stem, and a few of these stems grow from an underground bulb of roots. Leaves are flat, soft and fragile. It will grow to a maximum height of about 10 feet.

It is a tropical plant. Here is some more information on this plant.

Propagation

You can easily propagate this plant from seeds. Remove the fruit coating from the seed after soaking it in warm water for a couple of days. Soaking the fruits make it easier for you to pull the fruit off of it. Then germinate the seed in rich soil mix either in re-closable zip lock bags or some tub or tray. Make sure the soil mix is always moist but not wet. You will not have to keep the soil moist manually in the reclosable bag because it will retain the moisture. The bamboo palm seeds can take a lot of time for germination. They can take up to nine months to germinate. Once the seeds have germinated and developed a root system, you can place them in pots. Never expose the seedlings to bright or direct sunlight if you want them to survive.

Their scientific name is chamaedorea seifrizii.

Some Care tips:

Prune lower unhealthy branches on a regular basis.

Fertilize it infrequently during the growing season with a mild fertilizer.

Keep the leaves clean.

Ludisia Discolour Potting Medium?

I was given a Jewel Orchid (Ludisia Discolour) and I was wondering what was the best ‘potting medium’ to provide. I know that spaghnum moss is useful on top, but would I be better using bark and perlite, orchid compost, general organic compost (since the orchids are terrestial) or something else. Any other case instructions would also be welcome.

To normal potting mix, peat moss, sphagnum moss, sand and small gravel can be added to ensure good drainage; or mix normal potting mix with bark chippings. They have no pseudobulbs and require even moisture. Too much light and the leaf color will start to fade and humidity must be kept high to keep the fleshy leaves in good condition. These can also be grown in just sphagnum moss but if that dries out it is really hard to re-wet. Good luck

How much moisture does an Epiphyte need?

Ball moss, such as grows on trees (Tillandsia recurvata) doesn’t require earth to grow, but does it require a water source? I brought back a sample of it that I have on my kitchen window sill, but I was wondering, does it get enough moisture out of the air, or should I mist it every day?
I’m only keeping it as a curious plant but I don’t want it to die.

Tillandsia recurvata is a very hearty plant. The Tillandsias are members of the Bromeliad family. T. recurvata grows naturally across the southern U.S. in areas of high humidity. I would mount it on a piece of bark and hang it outside under a tree. You can also use old driftwood or scraps of redwood fencing. Mount it to the wood by tying it on with fine wire or fish line. Water it daily with the a garden hose. It will dry out fine between waterings with all the air circulation. It should handle weather down to freezing. You don’t say where you live so it’s hard to tell how it will do outside in the winter. If you expect a freeze bring it inside and hang it in a sunny spot but not in direct sun light. A kitchen or bathroom are best because you can water it more easily without getting furniture wet. Mist it while inside because it will not dry out as easily with the reduced sunlight and wind. As soon as the freeze danger is over take it back outside.

Once you start growing Tillandsia you might begin a collection. One grower in New York City has hundreds growing in his bathroom. The Florida Council of Bromeliad Societies has an excellent photo page. When you go to it click on “Tillandsia”.
