Why does my backflow preventer on my lawn sprinkler system spray water during and after watering cycle?

I have a backflow preventer on my sprinkler system that was working fine. Now it is spraying water from the bell. Any ideas on how to fix this?

First, back-flow preventers operate by opening up when there is no water pressure in the line in which it’s installed. This allows an air gap to develop which prevents any water back-flowing into the drinking water system causing the chance of polluting the drinking water supply.

It sounds like that when the sprinkler system was last turned on a small piece of debris in the incoming water lodged in the valve seat, preventing it from fully closing.

Some backflow preventers are capable of being disassembled and cleaned. If yours can be disassembled, do so, clean the valve and seat, and reassemble.

Another possible cause [if there is no debris on the valve or seat] is that the hinge mechanism has corroded, or been invaded by grit. The correction for this is lubrication with oil or something like WD-40 and then to manually recycle the valve flapper until it loosens up.
