How can I tell if I have a ground level foundation?

I may sound dumb but aren’t all foundations ground level. I recently had an estimate for new landscaping and was told they couldn’t build a retaining wall due to a ground level foundation. The gentlemen said seven to eight inches of my foundation would be exposed to seepage. I won’t question that simply because it makes since. Although, I would think that all foundations are ground level.

If you have a concrete floor (under the carpet/flooring) then you have a ground level foundation/slab on grade.
Either way you are best not removing soil away from a foundation.
